BogTrotters HillWalking Club, Dublin, Ireland 2008
Meeting every Sunday In Rathfarnham, Dublin 14

About the Club

Hello and welcome to our club website. The club is an easygoing hillwalking club based in Dublin that walks every Sunday and on Tuesday nights during the Summer and early Autumn months. We meet at the Tuning Fork pub (directions here >>>) in Rathfarnham (outside!) South Dublin every Sunday morning at 9.45am. (Check each walk though for any time changes.)

All walkers please remember that from February onwards all our Grade 2 and 3 walks will have a new meeting time - meet at 09:45 at the Tuning Fork to leave at 10:00. Please let others know that are not on the mailing list.
Grade 1 walks meet at 9.15am to leave at 9.30am

In addition we, have four one day trips and about four weekends-away each year - take a look at the Other Events page.

We are a small club with about 50 members and each walk sees about 8 to 16 people take part hillwalking mainly in Wicklow and Dublin.

Bogtrotters club is affiliated to the Mountaineering Council of Ireland and all club members are members of the MCI. Among the benefit of MCI membership is insurance which is necessary as a member. The other benefits are explained on the New Members page.

Grading of Walks

The club walks are graded as follows in accordance with their challenge.

Grade 1 – Tough / good level of fitness required (6 hours + with a lot of climbing and mostly on rough ground)

Grade 2
– Strenuous / suitable for most regular walkers but tougher than grade 3 at about (5 – 6 hours)

Grade 3 – Moderate / suitable for beginners if they have a reasonable level of general fitness (4 – 5 hours). Please note though that these walks are mostly off tracks and are across rough terrain and steep hills.

New Members

If you are interested in joining then visit the New Members page for more information about the club and trying out the walks and us! You can also contact the leaders and ask them about the walk.

You must read the safety page before coming on a walk!
Please make sure you have the essentials if you arrive for a walk as you WILL need them this is Ireland after all the land of 4 seasons in one day!

New members are requested to come along on a grade 3 walk first of all regardless of their previous experience. This is because one persons level of experience and fitness compared to another is based on their point of view and leaders of the walks being responsible need to assess your level of fitness etc compared to the rest of the group and the walk planned.

The aim is to enjoy the walk!

Bulletin Board
Our bulletin board lists all the current walks as well as all previous walks and trip and any comments members wish to make. In addition useful information and news items such as TV programmes about walking, outdoor shop sales, changes in walks (rare) are among those items which can be posted.
While anyone may view the board only members of the club may actually make posts.

Weather

For those of you interested in checking out the weather before we walk in particular leaders then here are two of the main sites.

Met Eireann
Using the Regional forecast and 3 day reports. Try the rainfall radar as its very good. Usually the Met errs on the side of caution but prepare for the worst as it is Ireland and the top of a mountain can be quite different from the bottom!
Go to Met Eireann >>>

Wind Guru.
Used mostly by people for water based activities but its got a very good reputation for accuracy. Just put in your location, the current link is set to Brittas bay in County Wicklow.
